Shenandoah Valley AVA

Stretching over two hundred miles along the western side of the Blue Ridge — and actually crossing into West Virginia — the Shenandoah Valley AVA is Virginia's largest wine region by area. Established in 1982 (two years before Monticello), it spans from Winchester in the north down through Harrisonburg, Staunton, and Lexington, with the Shenandoah River carving a distinctive limestone-rich terrain that many winemakers credit for the region's crisp, structured wines. The valley's elevation and cooler nights produce wines with bright acidity — you'll find exceptional Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, and cool-climate experiments with Albariño and Grüner Veltliner. It's a region that rewards unhurried exploration: fewer crowds than the Monticello circuit, and the scenic drives alone are worth the trip.
