Tucked into the ridges and valleys north of Roanoke near Blacksburg, the North Fork of Roanoke AVA is one of Virginia's oldest — designated in 1983 — but also one of its smallest and least commercial. The handful of producers here work at elevation, often with hybrid grapes that handle the climate's swings, and the region sees a fraction of the traffic of Monticello or Middleburg. If you're already in the New River Valley area, it's worth a detour.
