48 wineries · 1465 Governor's Cup awards · 2018–2026
Rolling east from the Blue Ridge foothills across Albemarle, Nelson, Greene, Orange, and Fluvanna counties, the Monticello AVA is Virginia's most celebrated wine region — and arguably the spiritual home of American viticulture. It was here in the 1770s that Thomas Jefferson tried (and mostly failed) to grow European vinifera at his hilltop estate. Established as a federally-designated AVA in 1984, the region has since become home to more than forty wineries producing some of the East Coast's most acclaimed wines, with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Viognier, and Petit Manseng leading the charge. A weekend spent tracing the stretch from Crozet west to Afton, or north through Barboursville and Gordonsville, will take you through centuries of Virginia wine history and some of the prettiest countryside in the mid-Atlantic.
