Madison County sits at the northern edge of the greater Monticello wine region — the federal Monticello AVA boundary stops just south of here, running along the Greene County line. The wineries listed here are in Etlan, Leon, and the rural western half of the county, at the foot of the Blue Ridge and bordering Shenandoah National Park. The growing conditions are essentially continuous with the AVA to the south, and several of these wineries are members of the Monticello Wine Trail even though they sit just outside the federal boundary. A natural stop if you're making the Old Rag Mountain hike or driving Route 231 between Sperryville and Madison.
